Let’s move on to our first original composition. It was actually intended as a solo piece at first… and it was originally conceived as minimal music… well, that’s just how the creative process goes 🙂
It all started with an assignment from college:
- Try to use mainly two chords: E minor and F-sharp minor (plus substitute chords).
- In addition, the piece should be inspired by minimal music.
So far, so good. Let’s get started. After a while, I showed a friend the nearly finished piece, and she said, “That’s not minimal music.” I was indignant and explained to her what I had in mind — how the different motives flow into one another and repeat across the various voices. “Ah, but there’s still too much going on there,” was the response. Well, I guess that’s true. It certainly didn’t turn out to be minimal music —instead, it’s packed full of my diverse musical influences and emotions. You can give it a listen above.
